IEI celebrates National Women’s History month and the monumental impact that women have made throughout the globe in many fields, including science and engineering. In 1946, Hattie Scott Peterson was the first African American woman in the U.S. to earn a degree in civil engineering. She graduated from Howard University with a B.S. in Civil Engineering, started her career with the US Geological Survey and then succeeded on to become the first African American woman engineer in the US Army Corp of Engineers (USACE).
