Van Wyck Expressway (I-678) Bridge Rehabilitation
The Van Wyck Expressway Deck Replacement Project is in Flushing Queens, NY, south of Flushing Creek and adjacent to Flushing Meadow Park. The bridge is 130’ wide with six (6) travel lanes and consists of a total of 129 bridge spans with 26 spans to be replaced. The objective was to replace the concrete deck, perform concrete pier repairs, replace all bearings, and perform necessary steel repairs which will increase the service life of the bridge by 40 years. Link slabs will be utilized, where feasible, to eliminate bridge deck joints.
The project scope consisted of the preliminary and final design for the rehabilitation of the bridge along 26 of the 129-span with a total length of approximately 3,000LF. The design included bridge inspection, highway geometric design, design of the substructure and superstructure, Work Zone Traffic Control (WZTC), replacement of overhead sign structures, analysis of the existing bridge structure, lighting, drainage design, and utility relocation.
As a subconsultant, IEI’s responsibility for the project included preliminary and final structure design services, overhead sign structure, bridge inspection, load rating analysis, and fatigue analysis. IEI will start construction inspection of the project later this year.
